I know there are a lot of freelancers out there who neither want nor need such sites; just as there are some who prefer working through these sites. After a year I let my membership lapse as I discovered that I could get more than enough work by just doing a bit of market research - anaylsing magazines and putting in proposals. Frankly, I found these sites a waste of money. Granted, I am more print than internet focused and people writing exclusively for the net may find them a bit more useful. Also, they are very US-focused so as a writer working from the UK and South Africa I found them a little alienating. I'm glad you've found them of some use.
